When we humans face traumatic or disturbing events, the experience quite literally changes our brain chemistry. Normally, our brains have very specific ways of processing and storing information. But stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol can interrupt this process, leaving us struggling to piece together the fragments of what we’ve witnessed or experienced.
EMDR therapy is a revolutionary method for helping our brains reprogram traumatic events, certain unwanted behaviors, or long-term stress and anxiety. During therapy, you’ll safely work towards accessing the distressing memory while engaging in a process called bilateral stimulation (BLS). BLS may involve moving the eyes back and forth, tapping your hands and feet, or another repetitive movement. Over time, this process can help your brain separate threats from non-threats so you can effectively and efficiently move forward with your life.
At Hebert Counseling, we believe that lasting, transformative change is possible for everyone. We know the first step is often the hardest, so we strive to make it easy—get in touch with us today to schedule your free 15-minute consultation!
